March 1, 2016

Dear OWUSS Friends,

It is my very great pleasure to announce that Mr. Christopher K. Millbern, from Sierra Madre, California was selected on February 29th to be the 2016 North American Rolex Scholar of the Our World-Underwater Scholarship Society. Chris turned 26 years old today. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of California Los Angeles.  He currently works as a Diver Medic for an ecological survey company. He is a Certified Hyperbaric Technologist, and is also certified as both an Emergency Medical Technician and a Wilderness Medical Technician. He is an AAUS Scientific Diver and is a NAUI Divemaster in training. Chris’s primary underwater interests are hyperbaric medicine and diver safety, as well as ecological research and conservation. Through the experiences of the scholarship, he hopes to use his background in backcountry medicine and hyperbarics to become a useful member of a research diving team.

The Scholarship Selection Committee feels that Chris is highly qualified to excel in his role representing the Scholarship Society and has the determination and passion to make a lasting contribution to the underwater world in the future.

I am sure you will all wish to join me in welcoming Chris to the Scholarship family and wish him success in his upcoming year of challenge, adventure, and learning. He can be reached at cmillbern@ucla.edu.

A full bio and photo will follow shortly.

With kindest regards,

Robin

OWUSS-Photo-200BIO – Christopher K. Millbern

Chris Millbern is a latecomer to the underwater world, but his passion for diver safety and adventure has made him a natural fit for the Our World-Underwater Scholarship Society’s Rolex Scholarship Program.

Born 26 years ago in Newport Beach, California, Chris was raised on ocean swims and thousands of viewings of National Geographic’s “Really Wild Animals: Deep Sea Dive” VHS tape, which he of course still holds on to today.  Majoring at UCLA in Ecology, Behavior, and Evolution, Chris became a concerned conservationist and backpacking guide, combining his love of adventure sports, photography, and the biological sciences in any way possible.  Research was his mission; while enrolled, Chris participated in studies involving Belizean crocodilian parasitology, the effects of anthropogenic noise on Nicaraguan spider monkeys, heavy metal poisoning in Arizona rattlesnakes, as well as earning the Santa Monica Audubon Society Research Award for his work on anticoagulant poisoning in local bobcat populations. He learned a deep appreciation for the importance of protecting our environment, but he missed the ocean and his young dreams of exploring with National Geographic simply didn’t look possible.

It wasn’t until a spontaneous Open Water class his senior year that everything changed.  Realizing how much he was missing by living on the surface, Chris became instantly dedicated to making the world of diving his own.  In the next two years, he would become a PADI Rescue Diver, AAUS Scientific Diver, and join the UCLA Gonda Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine as an E.M.T. and Certified Hyperbaric Technologist.  Working with patients in hundreds of chamber dives, he became enamored with hyperbaric medicine and took every opportunity to teach it.  He has given educational talks to local dive shops, high school programs, visiting physicians, and even the 95th Aerospace Medical Squadron from Edwards Air Force Base.

While working at the chamber, Chris became involved in a number of research initiatives focused on diver safety concerning transport of injured divers, nation-wide hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) availability, and emergency equipment testing.  Most importantly, he was introduced to a problem facing artisanal fishermen in Mexico: equipped with tool-grade air compressors, surface-supplied hoses, and little to no safety precautions, divers’ air sources were being contaminated with engine exhaust and annual decompression illness rates exceeded 75% of the diving population.  In response, Chris helped design and machine in his own garage an effective snorkel that could elevate the intake above the exhaust fumes, but was also detachable, made of inexpensive and common materials, and drastically reduced carbon monoxide concentrations.  After raising the necessary funds, Chris and the UCLA Hyperbaric team traveled to the Yucatan and worked with community leaders to install these devices and measure their effectiveness.  In addition, they taught safer diving practices and oxygen delivery for injured divers.  Today the design and lessons have spread to multiple cities and fishing cooperatives, and will hopefully continue to save lives for years to come.  Seeing the enormous variance in diving practices and equipment, Chris has made it his life goal to continue introducing safe diving practices and innovative solutions to problems facing divers around the world.  In doing so, he hopes to always place focus on incorporating the local cultures, communities, and needs of divers to create lasting effects and sustained progress wherever he goes.

As a newly minted Diver Medic, Chris has begun working with ecological survey groups across the California coast.  Balancing his love of conservation and hyperbaric medicine, he first wants to develop his skills as a diver so as to better contribute to the teams and projects he works on.  Encouraging marine preserves through responsible ecotourism, driving research and public policy towards pragmatic solutions, and bringing a love of the ocean to a new generation of divers are all things Chris hopes to achieve. Most importantly, he wants to give back: “The underwater world has given me a sense of purpose and the community has given me a home.  All I really want is to keep the environment safe, and the people who protect and enjoy it even safer.”

Join S.O.L.O. on a Philanthropic Expedition to the Philippines

SOLO-logo-100S.O.L.O. Embarks on Philanthropic Philippines Expedition

By John Tapley

For 14 years, Save Our Leatherback Operation (S.O.L.O.) has been devoted to the protection of the giant leatherback sea turtle: a critically endangered species, which is found in all of the world’s oceans.

Previously, the IRS-certified, non-profit public charity primarily pin-pointed its goals off the waters of Indonesia, but has finished the mission thanks to the dedication and hard work of many international volunteers and local villagers. The group is now expanding its operations to Philippine waters, and with the help of local organizations, is conducting a unique expedition this spring open to advanced divers who wish to join an important globe-sweeping cause. The dives will occur in an area, which has been identified by 50 scientists as “The Best Dive Location on the Planet”.

From April 21 to May 1, S.O.L.O volunteers and guests will embark on a heroic journey off the coast of Mindoro Island in an area recognized for its beauty and rich biodiversity: Verde Island. Vacationers will board the uniquely designed 16-passenger vessel, Big Beth, which includes its own personal chef who prepares surface interval meals. Participants will enjoy the very best of open ocean diving the area has to offer in exclusive sites: three daytime dives and one at night, each day of the trip. The expedition will also feature luxurious, five-star accommodations; the acclaimed Marco Vincent Resort comes equipped with a full service dive center, large air conditioned rooms, laundry services, and much more. The adventure will also feature a number of events, which include three island BBQs, an original Texas BBQ at the resort restaurant prepared by S.O.L.O. founder Dr. Larry McKenna, and a farewell party with unique gifts for participants.

At the core of these amusements is S.O.L.O.’s mission to safeguard the giant leatherback sea turtle: a mighty, yet fragile member of the oceanic world.

According to Dr. McKenna, the plight of the giant leatherback sea turtle is one that cannot be overlooked. Due to climate change and human interference, these reptiles are quickly losing their native nesting grounds by steadily encroaching sea waters and increased temperatures that destroy countless eggs before they allowed to properly mature. On average, giant leatherbacks can weigh in excess of 3,000 pounds after reaching full maturation and must eat the equivalent of their weight in jellyfish and sea squirts every day in order to survive. The leatherbacks are prominent predators in global oceanic food webs, and as such, the after effects of their depopulation have been staggering. Jellyfish, the turtles’ primary food source, are being allowed to propagate en masse, which is causing chaos in the natural order. Large concentrations of jellyfish now crowd beaches around the globe, and left unchecked, have gorged themselves on newly hatched fingerlings of tuna, salmon, swordfish, and other enjoyable seafood staples, which has resulted in higher prices per pound at the grocery store.

McKenna and his volunteers are working to reverse the giant leatherback sea turtle’s steadily quickening course to extinction through activism, education, and good will. During field missions, S.O.L.O. members carefully transport eggs from hazardous shorelines to more protected locales on the same beach, enabling hatchlings to zero in on their birthplace when they return to nest, thus fixing a broken reproductive cycle. During S.O.L.O. expeditions and events, guests learn the ins and outs of the turtles and their behavior through direct, hands-on interaction and educational materials provided by the charity. Additionally, because the group is completely non-profit, funding is generated through expedition expenses, direct donations, or donated pieces of art, which are exchanged for cash during S.O.L.O. events.

This exciting S.O.L.O. excursion to Verde Island and other exciting dive locations is available to divers who have advanced open water certification and at least 50 dives in their logbook; guests will also need to provide a reef hook, safety sausage, and proof of medical evacuation insured by either DAN or PADI.

The cost of this voyage, per person, double room occupancy is $2,885, which includes transport to and from Manila, three meals a day, weight belts, and weights; participants can also opt for a single room at an added $35. per day. As strong allies to S.O.L.O., the resort and dive facilities are providing this expedition with a huge discount of $1,000 per person. Gear rentals are not included and can be acquired at Marco Vincent Resort. Additionally, U.S. tax paying citizens who join the expedition can receive up to a 100 percent tax rebate from all expenses related to the mission.

Spaces aboard the Big Beth have filled up fast. Interested participants will need to register quickly in order to reserve a spot by contacting McKenna at info-saveourleatherbacks@earthlink.org; a $500 deposit fee is required before March 15 and full payment is due by April 10.

The complete description of this new expedition, including the application forms can be located at a new web site at www.leatherbackturtleexpeditions.org.

For more information on S.O.L.O., its current happenings, and how to join the cause, visit www.saveourleatherbacks.org.

Beqa Lagoon Resort – Cyclone Winston Update

BeqaBEQA LAGOON RESORT  –  Cyclone Winston Update

Bula Vinaka to all our industry partners and friends,

As you know, Cyclone Winston passed through Fiji this last weekend. All guests and visitors to the country are accounted for and are unharmed.

Beqa Lagoon Resort is fortunate to report that Winston did not hit our Beqa Island.  Our grounds got a bit fuffled in the wind, but all structures and boats are fine.  Check out our facebook page for daily pics and blog. We had a full house of guests arrive Saturday and are operating as normal.  Our internet and telephone service has been sporatic, but most cell phone service is working.  The flights were suspended for a few days, but have resumed service on February 22, 2016.

Many areas of the country continue to be without power or telecommunications. While many resorts in Nadi, Denarau and the Coral Coast have suffered minor damage, other areas of the country have been hit harder and we ask for your continued thoughts and prayers for the people of Fiji.  The minister of Fiji stated that tourism remains an important industry for Fiji and this setback will not curb the enthusiasm and warm hospitality that Fiji is renowned for.  For further details on how you may participate in the relief effort, please visit the tourism website at www.tourismfiji.com.

Editorial – February 2016

Gene-Video-200February Progress – A Result of Good Planning
by Gene Muchanski, Editor
The Dive Industry Professional

February is more than just the second month of the year in the diving industry and the beginning of a new season.  It’s the month that separates the successful dive businesses from the also-rans.  Let me explain.

In years past, the first quarter was a sleeper for most of the diving industry.  We used to celebrate the Christmas Holiday by getting ready for Dema Show in January, and just about this time we would be placing our orders with the major OEM’s for sales we made at the show.  The Retailers would go back to their stores and wait for Spring to come, which signaled the launch the new season.  For some, the second quarter would also be a sleeper combined with a little house keeping to wait for the arrival of the real beginning of the new season – Memorial Day.  So five months were lost, waiting for the scuba season to begin.  Those days are gone forever.  Time waits for no one and the successful 21st Century Entrepreneurs are taking advantage of opportunities their competitors are not.

There have been major changes in the buying cycle of the diving industry.  The Dema Show is now held in November and that gives the industry time to sell off the current inventory during the Christmas buying season and stock the shelves with new merchandise either for Christmas or the New Year.  The first quarter is still the pre-season marketing push for the trade at the local dive and adventure travel shows.  The consuming diving public is lining up to see what is new for the year and they want to buy new diving gear and go diving.  Unfortunately, not all manufacturers and retailers are exhibiting at these shows and taking advantage of this market.  The ones who do, literally have the market to themselves.

But creating a local marketplace that is the focal point of significant buying and selling activity is a cooperative effort for every dive business in the industry.  The Trade Show Organizers are willing to take a financial risk to put on a successful show that the diving community will attend. The Manufacturers have to have a complete inventory, ready to ship and be able to work with their Dealer Base in the local regions.  Exhibiting at the shows and conducting seminars and workshops are two ways to increase promotion of their brand.  Dive Retailers need to promote the shows to their customer base.  In some areas, the local dive show may be the major event of the year.  It is unthinkable that every store doesn’t promote their local show.   Your customers are going to find out about the show with or without your help and if you’re not there to meet them, they’ll meet with your competitors. There are two ways of getting a booth at a local show.  1) Exhibit yourself.  2) Volunteer to work the booth of one of your major manufacturers or travel wholesaler.

Here is what we’ve learned in the many years of exhibiting at dive shows.  The first thing we realized is that local dive shows are the major event of the year in many geographical locations.  There is a lot of planning that goes into these shows.  You have to get many people involved for facilities, seminars, workshops, exhibiting, and advertising.  You have to get speakers, exhibitors, volunteers, advertisers, and sponsors.  The more people you get involved in the process, the more the event will grow in size and complexity.  At the same time you have to get the dive trade involved and the diving community committed.

The most important lesson we’ve learned over the years is that making a commitment to a trade or consumer show requires time, money and manpower.  We plan for it early and the execution steps of that plan are put in our Daily Playbook.  Maybe that’s why we are having such a good year this year?  Our Marketing Plan was completed by the end of last year.   In the past three months we have been focusing on our planned outcomes with our members and the local diving communities.  We’ve documented what is important to our organization and we’ve identified tactics that will  help us accomplish our goals and objectives.  We follow through with our efforts and we analyze our successes and shortcomings every step of the way.  The great thing about strategic planning is that every event is a learning experience and each event that follows benefits from the successes and failures of past events.

We hope to be using that learning experience in the promotion of the new DIVE LOCAL campaign.  Join the discussion with us at the North Central Summit Meeting on Friday, February 25, 2016 at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare, in conjunction with the 45th Annual Our World-Underwater Show.  We will be in the Lamert Room from 12:00 noon – 3 p.m. meeting with the local diving community.  Join us, but please RSVP with gene@diveindustry.net

Our World-Underwater – February 26-28, 2016

wow-200Our World-Underwater
Dive & Travel Show
Rosemont, IL
February 26-28, 2016

by Gene Muchanski
Editor, The Dive Industry Professional

The new year is here and the trade show season is in full swing. This year our focus is on dive and travel shows.  We tried the Surf Expos and the Adventure Travel Shows in the past six years but are back to focusing on consumer shows that specialize in scuba diving and diving related adventure travel. There is a higher concentration of specialized exhibitors in the exhibit halls and the seminars and workshops are tailored to divers who want to spend their recreational dollars on what interests them the most.

Our second show this year will be in Rosemont, IL on February 26-28, 2016 for the 46th Annual Our-World Underwater Dive & Travel Show.  This is the largest dive & travel show in the Midwest.

Seminars, Workshops and Film Festival:  The Show features over 13 workshops & 96 seminars on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, presented by 96 Speakers, many of who are the “Best in the Business”, like Annie Crawley, Steven Frink, and Jill Heinerth.  The topics are varied, and include everything from adventure travel, marine conservation, technical diving, exotic marine life to secrets of great underwater photography.  The Friday & Saturday Film Festivals will be hosted by Paul Cater Deaton and include the works of Jill Heinerth and a cast of other Speakers.  The Workshops, Seminars and Film Festivals bring world-class education and entertainment to one of the greatest diving hubs in the country.

The North Central Dive Market:  The greater Chicago area is a great market place for scuba diving.  It has a large concentration of certified divers in the United States.  At last count, there are approximately 279 Retail Dive Centers and at least 50 Dive Clubs in the Nine-State Greater North Central United States.  If our Industry shared statistics and demographics on our industry, we could tell you how many scuba instructors there are in the nine state area and how many certified divers live there.  Although I can’t tell you what the economic impact of scuba diving is in the North Central United States, I can tell you that it is significant.  The fact that Our World-Underwater has been one of the three largest dive shows in the country for 46 years tells you that there is a market for scuba diving in the Midwest and it is BIG.

Something For the Local Dive Professionals:  There will be 13 workshops and activities for Chicago area Dive Professionals during the three day weekend. Check Our World’s web site schedule at www.ourworldunderwater.com

On Friday, February 26, 2016 from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm, the first North Central Regional Summit Conference will kick off to address the “State of the Industry” for Local Retail Dive Centers, Local Dive Clubs, Local Boat Operators and Local Scuba Instructors.”  The conference will be held in the Lambert Room of the Hyatt Regency O’Hare, The Host Hotel for the Our World-Underwater Dive & Travel Show.  Guest Speakers include Gene Muchanski (Dive Industry Association), Rick Stratton (Scuba & H2O Adventure Magazine),  Patrick Hammer (Scuba Emporium), Capt. Jim Gentile (Windy City Divers) and Lucy Dunbar (PADI Americas).  The three hour conference will include 1 hour of Introductions and Guest Speakers, a 1 hour breakout session to discuss industry and regional challenges, and a 1 hour summary of what can be done to make the local diving community stronger.  Admission is free but space is limited to 50 Industry Professionals.  Please RSVP with Gene Muchanski at gene@diveindustry.net or call Gene at 321-914-3778.

The Exhibit Hall:  The Exhibit Hall will be open on Friday from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Saturday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm and Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.  There will be 114 Exhibitors in 170 Booths, consisting of major dive equipment manufacturers, dive training agencies, local dive clubs, dive stores, dive brokers and some of the best travel destinations on the planet.

Summary:  The 46th Annual Our World-Underwater has all the makings of a wonderful show for the local diving community. The Diving Industry has embraced this show and they are looking forward to promoting the best of the best diving in the North Central U.S.

Editorial:  Patrick and Jim – Thank you for putting in the time and effort for making this show happen.  We’ll see you in Rosemont on February 26-28, 2016.
