Michele Felberg Selected as 2015 North American Rolex Scholar

owuss-100March 4, 2015

Dear OWUSS Friends,

It is my very great pleasure to announce that Ms. Michele Felberg, age 23, from Houston, Texas was selected on March 2nd to be the 2015 North American Rolex Scholar of the Our World-Underwater Scholarship Society.  Michele earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Studies, with a minor in Economics, from the University of Southern California. She is a NAUI Divemaster  and AAUS Scientific Diver. She is currently living in Palau, where she is a Dive Guide and Underwater Naturalist.  Her primary underwater interests are research, conservation, and finding innovative ways to encourage people to cherish and protect the ocean. Please see the attached bio and photo to learn more about Michele.

The Scholarship Selection Committee feels that Michele is highly qualified to excel in her role representing the Scholarship Society and has the determination and passion to make a lasting contribution to the underwater world in the future.

I am sure you will all wish to join me in welcoming Michele to the Scholarship family and wish her success in her upcoming year of challenge, adventure, and learning. She can be reached at felberg@usc.edu.

With kindest regards,

Robin MacFadden Parish

Michele-Felberg-200Michele Felberg Bio:  Michele Felberg, from Houston, Texas, always had an affinity for water but didn’t quite grasp her love for the underwater world until her years earning a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies and a minor in Economics at the University of Southern California.  It was during her sophomore year that she realized the magnitude of her passion and curiosity through her participation in two new Environmental Studies courses.  First, in the Intro to Scientific Diving course she earned her NAUI Open Water certification as well as the AAUS scientific diver certification.  In the second course, Integrated Ecosystem Management in Micronesia, she intensively studied the marine ecology, biodiversity, and conservation management of Micronesia and then traveled to Guam and Palau for a field research trip to evaluate coral reef health.  Data collected in this research were used, in part, as justification for listing Palau’s Southern Lagoon as a World Heritage Site.

This experience opened Michele’s eyes to the beauty and complexity of the marine world and she decided to pursue a concentration within the Environmental Studies department called “Oceans, Life, and People” which focused her studies on the underwater world. She spent half of her junior year in New Zealand, where she studied marine science, conducted research on freshwater macroinvertebrate populations and stream health, and sparked her love of adventure traveling.  As a senior she worked as a research assistant on a seagrass-monitoring project in Big Fisherman’s Cove on Catalina Island, examining monthly fluctuations in seafloor coverage of a foundation species of seagrass, Zostera marina. Michele presented the results of this research at the annual Southern California Academy of Sciences symposium.  Supplementing her research diving, she earned her Rescue Diver and Training Assistant certifications during the fall of her senior year.  The few weekends of her senior year Michele didn’t spend diving on Catalina Island, she was heavily involved in an organization called SC Outfitters, leading students on hiking and camping trips around the Southwest US, sharing her passion for the great outdoors and exploration.

During her last semester at USC, Michele was asked to serve as a Teaching Assistant (TA) for the two environmental studies courses that initiated her interest in the underwater world. This position is rarely offered to an undergraduate. While assisting in the teaching of academic content and class logistics, Michele helped with the dive training of the new students and earned her Divemaster certification. Immediately upon graduation, she returned to Micronesia as a TA for the USC summer research field course in Palau. At the end of the class she was offered a position as a Dive Guide/ Underwater Naturalist at one of the top dive centers in Palau. Her work in Palau has fed her love for experiencing new cultures, diving, and sharing the wonders of the underwater world with the guests she guides. She has opportunities to assist visiting researchers  with their projects and was instrumental in developing a lecture series to inform guests, from a scientific perspective, about the local fauna, flora, and reef ecology. In addition, living in Palau has given her a greater appreciation for the power of local communities tied to the oceans and a better understanding of the importance of incorporating local knowledge with scientific research.  On the few days a month she doesn’t dive, Michele enjoys reading a good book, going on runs, exploring the land attractions of Palau, and wishing she was diving.

One of Michele’s long-range goals is to provide a legacy of relentless pursuit of the conservation and protection of the oceans by fostering within others a mindset that every individual can make a positive impact on marine conservation.

“The Return to Regional Dealer Networks”

Do you know who is the most powerful person or company in the diving industry?  Is it a Manufacturer?  A Training Agency? A Retail Dive Center?  How about a Travel Company or someone who is working at a Trade Association?  I bet that none of you have guessed that it was a Retail Dive Center.  As a former Retail Dive Store Owner and a person who has worked for a few Manufacturers, a Training Agency, a Travel Company, a Media Company and two Trade Associations, I can tell you where the power in the industry lays and why.  And it’s not in the Retail Sector!  But the interesting point of all this is that the Retail Dive Center sector of the diving industry is the most important, most influential and most potentially powerful sector of the industry.  Now, all we have to do is convince 1,800 Retail Dive Centers that they are the most important part of the diving industry.

The most powerful people in the diving industry are the ones who write the checks!

So why are Retail Dive Center owners not controlling the diving industry?  Sporting Goods Retail Stores control the Sporting Goods Industry.  Why aren’t Retail Dive Center Owners the recipients of industry awards and Hall of  Fame nominations?  Why isn’t the Retail Class invited to the Black Tie Parties and Gala’s?  If the Retail Dive Centers account for the majority of new certifications in the industry, the majority of retail sales and the bulk of booked dive travel, then why isn’t there a category for Best Retailer of the Year at the many award programs throughout the industry?  The answer is simple but the rational is incomprehensible.  And why it has lasted this long is a mystery.  Are you tired of being good enough to buy stuff from your vendors but not good enough to go to the parties they go to?  Well, that’s all about to change.

DIA_RETAIL_LOGO-200The future of the diving industry is in the hands of the Retail Dive Centers.  Without Retailers there would be no diving industry.  Retailers are responsible for new certifications, equipment sales & service, dive travel and the perpetuation of interest and excitement of scuba diving, as a recreation with local events and activities.  Unfortunately there is little or no data on how important Retail Dive Centers are and to what percentage of business they account for.  What’s need is a strong, unified, and independent Retail Association that can gather information and share it with its members.  Dive Industry Association has a section of its organization set aside for Retail Dive Centers.  The scope of the association is International, and divided into National, Regional, State, and Local Chapters.

Promotion at Regional Shows:  Dive Industry Association exhibits at dive and adventure travel shows.  Member Retailers are asked to staff our booth at shows in their territory.  Shows are supported with pre-show, at-show and post-show marketing campaigns.  DIA is working with show promoters to start conducting business seminars at each show for members of the local Retail Network.  Similar programs have worked well at Our World-Underwater and the Dive & Travel Expo in Tacoma, WA.

Retail Center Profile:  DIA’s non-profit training organization, The Dive Industry Foundation, conducts an annual Retail Dive Center Profile that establishes a retail baseline for all retail profit centers.  Over 70 Retailers have participated in this profile.  Participants receive a summary report that shows them where they stand amongst their competitors.

Industry Best Practices:  Using the annual Retail Center Profile & Survey, Dive Industry Foundation is putting together an “Industry Best Practices” recommendation that it will share at Regional Business Seminars.

Eligibility:  Membership in Dive Industry Association’s Retail Association is open to all Retail Dive Centers regardless of their Training Agency or Manufacturer affiliation.    Annual dues are $125.  Membership is not required to participate in the association annual retail profile program.

Flip Fins Fold Up For Topside Mobility

DSC_0882-200Flip Fins fold Up For Topside Mobility

High-tech swim fins are designed to be as efficient as possible in the water – but the problem remains that they’re very awkward and restrictive on land. That’s why we can instantly see the value of these convertible fins from Flip Fins Inc. that fold up out of the way to allow full mobility out of the water and click down with your first kick once you’re in the water.

Scuba fins are not designed for walking, and putting them on before entering the water has traditionally presented a challenge for both novice and experienced divers. Omega Flip Fins were founded by an experienced veteran of the Israeli special forces who recognized the need for a fin that was maneuverable both in and out of the water to eliminate the risk of military divers drifting away as they attempted to put on fins in the water while fully loaded with scuba gear. The Omega Flip Fin is uniquely designed to be strapped on prior to entering the water and removed after exiting, and allows divers to walk while wearing their scuba fins.

The two-piece fin utilizes a special hinge that allows the webbed blades of the fin to be kept in the up or walking position until swimming in the water. Torsion springs push the soft blade webbing against the shin to allow divers to easily maneuver in and out of the water. The blades are locked into swimming position by a simple kick in the water.

It’s a simple concept but promises to have a profound effect on rescue and special forces divers who are in and out of the water all day – not to mention recreational divers who don’t want to flop around like a circus clown in their boats!

The Omega Flip Fins are available through Flip Fins Inc.

“Scuba Diving is a Normal Recreation”

We are hearing a lot of chatter from Dive Manufacturers and Retail Dive Centers that business is down significantly from past years.  Is it the economy?  Is it  the market?  Or is it that we have not adapted to the changes in customer behavior?  I spoke with a friend of mine, Dave Pollock, who was the General Manager of Mares in the mid 1990’s.  Dave had a unique industry perspective because Mares is owned by Head Sports and they specialize in many different types of recreational products and markets.  I listened to Dave as he talked about the popularity and life cycles of other recreational sports, like running, tennis, golf and snow skiing.  All of these sports have had hugh swings in popularity through out the years and the sporting goods industry had to deal with some challenging times.  Scuba diving is no different.  We need to understand and deal with economic factors like a flat economy, high unemployment and under-employment, a declining population, an ageing baby boomer market, more recreational options available to the young consumer and an entire change in consumer behavior.

We first have to admit that scuba diving is a normal recreational just like other sports and that changes in consumer demographics, geographics, psychographics and genagraphics will change the way we need to do business in the future.  If we can identify the problems, we can formulate a plan on how we are going to deal with the problems.  Success is within our reach and capabilities.
