Chris Richardson – NAUI BOD Candidate

chrisby Chris Richardson
NAUI 17055
109 Jacob Court
Forsyth, GA 31029
Phone: 404-579-7631

Chris Richardson: Biosketch Originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, Christopher served in the Canadian Armed Forces from 1984 to 1995.During his service he served in submarines, surface ships and with Land Forces. Operationally he served in the 1991 Gulf War, with NATO and United Nations Peacekeeping forces. Christopher brings broad diving industry experience to NAUI. After leaving the Canadian military he moved to the Cayman Islands, where following a year working in a bar, he worked as a resort instructor, repair tech, dive sales and store manager. In 2000 Chris left Grand Cayman for the United States where he managed a large dive store in South Florida and then spent two years doing dive consulting to the mega yacht community. In 2002 Christopher began his successful career as a sales manager in the Dive industry, representing at various times Mares, Dacor, Oceanic, OMS, Delta P(VR Dive Computers). During his tenor as a Caribbean Sales Manager he held a voluntary position as the NAUI Caribbean Sales Manager. Since 2007 Christopher was a principle with EDGE and HOG Dive gear, a startup of diving equipment with both national and international distribution. He left EDGE and HOG in July 2014 to pursue new opportunities. He first became a NAUI instructor in 1994, taught scuba diving in Tobermory, Ontario, and Grand Cayman, and has been active as a NAUI Instructor, Course Director for Recreational and Technical diving. Christopher has been awarded the NAUI Outstanding Service Award, NAUI Continuing Service award and NAUI Ambassador Award. Christopher’s complete C.V and in detail position statement, can be viewed at www.richardsonforbod.com

Position Statement It’s been an interesting last year for NAUI. While the actions of some have disappointed me, the passion of our members has made me certain of the bright future of NAUI. Our association is unique, our membership, unlike other training agencies(where you are no more a “member” than at the local gym), is really in practice a “Citizenship” in our association. It requires that we as members participate in the process. My NAUI qualifications and experience has allowed me to enjoy a good living in a field I love. I want all and future NAUI leaders to be afforded the same privilege. I feel my experience, knowledge and frankly tenacity will stand in good stead to represent the members of the association at the board level. My intentions are simple, to examine each issues brought to the board in the context of how it aligns with our shared values as NAUI Instructors.

Answers To The BOD Election Questions

1. I wish to leverage my experience and expertise in all aspects of the dive industry to help reinvigorate and strengthen NAUI for the future while being an advocate for traditional NAUI shared values. I bring the unique advantage of experience in both international and the domestic US dive industry. I have a proven track record for innovation and success in business models. A board members responsibility is to be involved yet removed from day to day governance, a sounding board and idea incubator. A member of the board is expected to represent and be responsible to the membership of our association. We are an association of equals, that is something that I would remember, respect and guide me as a board member.

2. Over the last three years I have been awarded the Continuing Service Award (2011) for teaching as an Instructor and Course Director in the Southeast. I have conducted numerous ITW’s, ITC’s, Technical Instructor Programs and have conduced IQP’s for NAUI Instructor Trainers conducting ITP’s. Frankly at this time I am more interested in “creating” more potential divers for our instructors to teach than qualified candidates for NAUI membership. If we create the first the second takes care of itself. We create that pool of potential divers by offering compelling reasons to choose NAUI training over other offerings on the market, frankly we aren’t in a position to outspend our primary competition in marketing, but are easily in a position to “outquality” them creating trained, comfortable and excited divers who become our best marketing effort.

3. I am excited by using technology to improve scuba training, provided it is used to make teaching more efficient and/or as supplementary to time with an instructor. The potential student often seeks faster training, and our industry has been too eager to provide. However poorly trained divers do not stay diving and they do not tell their friends that diving is great! Ideally, skill development and learning takes time. In water skills need to be taught repetitively over a period of time and academic knowledge needs to be comprehended and internalized. Too many “diving” classes today are rushed, leaving students with little skills and knowledge or even fear of diving. As a training agency NAUI needs to address these pressures in a manner that balances the economic and marketing realities with quality standards and a corporate culture that puts the needs of the students first.

  • Endorsement by Chad Barby, NAUI 7583:  I fully support Chris Richardson for the NAUI Board of Directors.  NAUI needs people who are Hard Core Drivers that can regain control of its Service Centers.”  NAUI Instructors can email me at chadb7583@gmail.com
  • Endorsement by Bill Childers, NAUI CD 5709 L:
  • Endorsement by Tom Brooks, NAUI 42340: I fully support Chris Richardson for NAUI Board of Directors.  NAUI needs members who have Chris’ experience in the dive industry and are very ACTIVE Recreational and Technical Dive Instructors.  Chris’ experience in the Public Safety Diving area will help move NAUI in the correct direction adopting a PSD training program, second to none.  This experience and leadership is very necessary to move NAUI forward in this very critical time.  I strongly recommend you to vote for Chris Richardson in the NAUI 2014 Board of Directors Election.  Any NAUI Instructor may contact me a tom.brooks3@icloud.com or cell 828-329-9911
  • Endorsement by Ralf Deutsch, NAUI 33589: “After reading through this forum and some related sites, I have decided to give 1 of my 2 votes to Chris Richardson. Chris I will campaign for you among the few NAUI instructors whom I know here in Korea. Good luck and do not believe anyone who tells you that being outspoken is a bad thing! There was much too little of that in the past years in our NAUI.”
  • Endorsement by Gene Muchanski, NAUI 3821 L:   I fully endorse and recommend Chris Richardson for the NAUI Board of Directors.  Chris has the experience and leadership necessary to take NAUI to a new level of professionalism.  This election is very critical to the future success of NAUI.  Last year marked a significant advance for NAUI when Michael Feld, Dallas Edmiston and Rick Lorimor were elected by the Membership and seated on the NAUI Board of Directors.  Over 400 NAUI Instructors fought to elect and seat the duly elected board members.  That, I believe was the tipping point to NAUI’s recovery in the marketplace.  I like to call it “Step One” for NAUI on the road to recovery and regaining its good reputation and prominence.  “Step Two” is electing people like Chris Richardson, to ensure that NAUI does not lose the ground it gained in the past year.  Chris relates well with the board members who were elected last year and possesses the necessary conviction to make sure that progressive plans for NAUI’s future are put in place.  NAUI needs a person with Chris’s conviction and determination to do the things necessary to guarantee NAUI return to a leadership role in the diving industry.  If you are not happy with the products, services or communication you are currently receiving from those hired to support you, Chris Richardson will work hard to turn that around.  I strongly recommend you vote for Chris Richardson on November 3rd as your next representative to the NAUI Board of Directors.
  • Endorsement by Dan Orr, NAUI 5612:  “Chris Richardson is an outspoken and enthusiastic young man.  Although I don’t always agree with Chris on certain issues, if he is willing to roll up his sleeves and put his energy to work to make NAUI a stronger organization, I will support him.”
  • Endorsement by Captain Spencer Slate, NAUI 5756:

Divebooker and ScubaTribe Announce Partnership

Munich / Vancouver – September 30th, 2014: The online community for diving is small, and when looking for diving bookings and reviews, it is often difficult to find trustworthy companies and reviews. ScubaTribe, a diving review system, and Divebooker, a diving holiday booking system, are proud to announce a partnership. The two companies have teamed up to allow dive centers to have an account with both websites, to showcase their reputation. This will allow divers to research and book their diving holidays in just one location, making it easier for the customers and the diving companies. Starting 30th of September 2014, ScubaTribe reviews will be integrated into Divebooker so the opinions of verified customers will be available throughout the booking process.

According to Dmitry Skripchenko, Managing Director of Divebooker, “We are excited to work with ScubaTribe. We want divers to be able to read reviews about potential venues, as we want them to have a good experience with their adventures. This partnership is a win-win for diving venues and divers alike.”

“ScubaTribe was developed to promote dive related businesses by providing a steady stream of verified customer feedback and analysis,” said ScubaTribe co-founder Tradian Almasanu.  “We offer not only verified reviews but also feedback surveys and various data collection solutions.  The integration with Divebooker is a natural step for us as it gives our customers greater visibility on the net.”

Marty Snyderman – Professional Photographer

DSC_0488-200Dive Industry Profile Series
Marty Snyderman – Professional Photographer
by Gene Muchanski, Editor
The Dive Industry Professional

Marty Snyderman is a professional photographer, author, educator, speaker and Emmy Award winning cinematographer who inspires underwater photographers around the world with his fascinating photographs and insightful marine articles.  We caught up with Marty at Scuba Club Cozumel (Mexico) while he was teaching photography seminars and workshops with Bonnie Pelnar.  It was a pleasure to sit down with an Underwater Photography Icon who is so well liked in the industry and is doing rather well for himself these days.

Marty Snyderman worked in the film business for over 25 years.  Marty kids that he actually had a full head of hair when he started diving.  A career in the diving industry started in earnest for this Arkansas native when he was managing a Dive Store in San Diego, California back in 1975.  In those days, San Diego was the epicenter of a relatively new diving industry and Marty had the pleasure to work at Chuck Nicklin’s retail dive center, the San Diego Diving Locker, with another budding photographer, current-day IMAX film producer Howard Hall.

Back in the day, the entry level ticket to work in the diving industry was to become a Scuba Diving Instructor.  So with a total of 27 dives under his belt, Marty graduated from the NASDS Diving Instructors College, and placed first in his class.  One week after becoming an instructor Marty worked at an NASDS Instructors Clinic as an Instructor Evaluator – and we won’t tell you how many students he had certified at that point. But it was fewer than one.

Marty’s early photography mentors were the legendary Jim & Cathy Church, Jack McKenney, and, of course, his friend Howard Hall.  His first piece of photography equipment was an underwater strobe he bought because Howard wrote down what he should buy on a napkin on the way home from a dive trip to the California Channel Islands.  Marty and Howard became close friends and managed to get the same day off from the store so they could go diving together and polish their photographic skills. Marty dived a lot in San Diego and improved his photographic skills while using amphibious Nikonos cameras which were the industry standard in those days.

Marty’s bio reads like the best of the best in Who’s Who so we will not attempt to replicate it here but rather link you to his web site – About Marty Snyderman

Marty Snyderman is currently the “Marine Life Editor” at Dive Training Magazine, The Monthly Magazine For New Divers & Their Instructors.   He enjoys his work at Dive Training Magazine because he likes and respects the people he works with, and he has noticed that his “Happiness Factor” is way up.  Sounds like he has the best of both worlds.

Always on the lookout for interesting experiences, Marty enjoys initiating his own projects rather than be re-assigned to something that he’s done many times before. As we talked, he was finishing his photography seminar with Bonnie Pelnar and starting to pack for his next self-assignment – Filming Saltwater Crocodiles in the Yucatan.

Today, because of weight limits when flying internationally, Marty laughingly states that he normally travels with 3 cameras, 4 strobes, 2 underwater housings, and 1 pair of underwear.  In a tight pinch, the underwear would be the first to go.

Looking back as one of the industry’s more accomplished photographers, Marty has some encouragement and great advice for the up-and-coming Underwater Photographers. “If you really want to do something, then it’s do-able. I promise, if I could make a career out of underwater photography, others certainly can.” He continued to say that new photographers “need to put in their time, not be afraid to try things, and understand that they will fail along the way. Everybody that gets anywhere in life fails at some point. Don’t let a bit of failure beat you.”

Residing in Solana Beach, CA, Marty Snyderman is one of approximately 75 people inducted into DEMA’s SCUBA diving Hall of Fame, Marty S is a proud recipient of DEMA’s 2008 Reaching Out Award. He is an EMMY Award winning cinematographer, accomplished still photographer, author and speaker specializing in the marine environment. The Marine Life Editor of Dive Training magazine, Marty produces at least three columns a month in every issue, including the underwater photography column entitled Behind The Lens and a natural history column entitled What’s That. Marty represents Dive Training magazine in Hawaii, and he teaches underwater photography seminars in dive centers in North America and at destinations around the globe. He is also the Senior Editor and a columnist for California Diving News, and the co-author of a series of apps on underwater photography.

Marty’s still photography has been used by the National Geographic Society, Nature Conservancy, National Wildlife Federation, REEF, Oceana, the Shark Research Institute, and many major publications, natural history museums and aquaria that express interest in marine wildlife and related issues. Marty serves on the Board of Trustees of the Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF), an organization that utilizes citizen volunteers around the world to provide data for research scientists studying the health of the world’s oceans.

Marty’s cinematography has been seen on numerous National Geographic productions, the PBS series Nature, the Discovery Channel, the BBC, ESPN and many other networks around the world. He also filmed the underwater segments in the Warner Brother’s hit Free Willy, a major theatrical release, and has worked on numerous award-winning series.

Editorial – September 2014

Gene-Video-200Promoting Scuba Diving – Come Join Us
by Gene Muchanski, Editor
The Dive Industry Professional

Welcome to the September 2014 Editorial of The Dive Industry Professional.  Curtis Clinkinbeard, in his book HyperGrow Your Business, said that we have 3 kinds of Customers; Current Customers, Previous Customers, and New Customers.  Eight years ago that statement changed the way I look at the buying public and my clients’ customer bases.  To this day, it still guides me every time I think about ways we can attract customers to our businesses and our industry. You see, I’m a Marketer and a Promoter.   You might call me an Advocate or a Scuba Diving Evangelist.  Sometimes I even think of myself as an Industry Cheerleader. I love scuba diving and I want everyone to do it.

To do it, you first have to learn how to do it.  And you need gear to do it.  And you have to take your gear somewhere to use it.  And you have to take your friends and family with you when you go, so they can do it with you.  It never ends.  I’m going to Grenada in two days and I need more gear; SeaLife Cameras, GoPro Videos, camera accessories and clothes, lots of clothes.  I need some new Bottom Crawlers Shirts for Dinners and Business Meetings on the Island and Chammyz Shorts for after the dives.  I need more stuff because I have an opportunity to use it.  Without activities to use my cool stuff, there is no reason to buy cool stuff.

I admit it.  I’m a scuba diving addict.  I got that way because someone introduced me to it.  What would have happened if that someone wasn’t there?  Maybe someone else would have introduced me to diving, maybe not.  Maybe I would have discovered it on my own, maybe not.  In today’s world with so many recreational options, the scuba diving industry cannot take that chance.  We have to be out there promoting diving every chance we get and every place where we meet potential customers.  And that costs money.

The Dive Industry Association has established a Network of diving businesses that teach diving, sell diving equipment and promotes travel opportunities that give us all a chance to use our cool stuff.  We promote that network via web sites, directories, blogs, press releases, newsletters, direct referrals and by meeting divers and potential divers at trade and consumer shows.   We don’t just “Preach to the Choir”, although we do spend a considerable amount of time and money on retention strategies for our current customers who are already divers.  Our Integrated Marketing approach to all customers includes reactivation campaigns that reach out to diving drop outs.  This group has excellent economic impact potential and is relatively easy and inexpensive to reach.

The type of customer that has the largest economic potential, however, is the New Diver.  Prospecting for new customers is the most costly and time intensive group to reach.  We first have to reach them where they live, work or recreate.  We have to convince them that scuba diving is easy, safe and enjoyable.  Usually non-divers don’t hang out with Divers and they don’t go to dive shows.  They do go to Adventure Travel Shows, Outdoor Shows, Watersports Shows and Boat Shows.  And that’s where the Dive Industry Association and the Dive Industry Foundation come in.  We promote the diving industry and our Members at Surf Shows and the Travel & Adventure Shows in addition to consumer dive shows.

If your company is looking to take advantage of the amount of advertising and promotion the Dive Industry Association is doing on the behalf of our Members, you should seriously consider Membership at $125 for the first year.  Read about Member Benefits

If your company would like to partner with the Dive Industry Foundation, a tax exempt, non-profit organization dedicated to “Promoting Economic Development in Watersports” we encourage you to become a Sponsor and help fund our marketing and advertising campaigns.  The Foundation already has an incredible track record, promoting diving with a limited budget.  This is no telling how much the industry can grow by cooperating together to bring in new divers.  It takes a unified Industry to be successful.

Dive Industry Association Partners With Travel & Adventure Shows

T&AShow-200by Gene Muchanski
Executive Director
Dive Industry Association, Inc.

The Travel & Adventure Shows are high-end consumer travel shows that bring the excitement of adventure travel to over 300,000 attendees at seven regional events every year. The shows are put together by Unicomm, the Leader in Adventure Travel Expos. The shows are successful for many reasons.  From a consumers perspective, the shows have exciting activities, Travel Industry Speakers, over one hundred travel destination exhibitors, door prizes, booth giveaways and show only specials.  All of the shows at any given time will be bustling with activity inside the exhibit hall.  Four Theatres feature Travel Industry Experts like Samantha Brown, from the Travel Channel and Pauline Frommer, Travel Writer for Frommer’s Travel Guides.  Our own Jean-Michel Cousteau was a guest speaker at the Travel & Adventure Theatre in Long Beach and thrilled a packed audience with tales of his great adventures.  Having the Travel & Adventure Theatre, the Destination Theatre, the Culinary Stage and the Global Beats Stage inside the Exhibit Hall gives maximum exposure to the exhibits and Exhibitors. Other activities inside the exhibit hall like the Rock Wall Climbing Experience, Aerial Zip Line, Walk on Water with the Bubble Runners and the Be-A-Diver Pool adds to the excitement and experience of the Travel & Adventure Shows.

The Dive Industry Association has been an Association Sponsor and Exhibitor at the Travel & Adventure Shows since 2010.  The past five years have taught us a lot about the adventure travel industry and the type of people who attend these shows.  They are adventurous people looking to book their next adventure.  They have money to spend on vacations and they travel frequently.  Many adventure travelers are scuba divers looking for a vacation that includes diving and many are adventurers looking to add something new to their outdoor lifestyle, like scuba diving.  The shows are well advertised by Unicomm in local newspapers and television stations.  The shows draw a crowd between 5,000 and 20,000 attendees per show.

Dive Industry Association recently partnered with Unicomm to build special “Dive Pavilion” areas at each of the Travel & Adventure Shows.  Our primary focus is to bring in more exhibitors that specialize in scuba diving and diving related water sports.  The association is authorized to sell booth space in the “Dive Pavilions” to travel companies, resort destinations, dive operators and diving equipment manufacturers.  We encourage major equipment manufacturers to purchase booth space and create opportunities for their local scuba equipment Dealers to staff the booths.  Regional Sales Managers should become involved in this venture by scheduling non-conflicting times that Dealers can staff the booths. We’ve orchestrated this in the past and have been very successful with the outcomes.  We learned that attendees coming to our booth typically ask three questions:  1) Do you teach diving?  2) Do you sell diving equipment?  3) Do you sell adventure travel?  A local Dive Retailer can answer “Yes” to all three questions. The same concept works for 4 or 5 local dive operators and dive resorts to partner with their local tourist board.

Exhibiting at a Travel & Adventure Show, or any show that that matter, will only be successful if the exhibitor creates a marketing campaign that covers Pre-show, At-show and Post-show marketing.  As part of promoting Dive Pavilions at the Travel & Adventure Shows, Dive Industry Association will be conducting Pre-Show Campaigns to bring more attendees to the show and our booths.  We are working on ticket promotions to bring in more local Retail Dive Center Owners and local Divers to the shows.  We are only days away from making an announcement about working with a major social media provider to offer Free and/or discount tickets to events such as these.

The next Travel & Adventure Show is in Dallas, Texas on October 25-26, 2014 at the Dallas Convention Center.  Dive Industry Association will be at Booth TBA.  All other Travel & Adventure shows are listed in our Shows & Events page on this web site.

For more information on securing a booth in “Dive Pavilions” at the Travel & Adventure Shows, contact Gene Muchanski, Executive Director, Dive Industry Association, at gene@diveindustry.net

Isla Cozumel: A Mexican Island With A Caribbean Flair

DSC_0457-200Isla Cozumel: A Mexican / Caribbean Island Paradise
By Gene Muchanski
Southeast Correspondent, Dive News Network

Isla Cozumel is a Mexican Island with a Caribbean flare. In a beautiful tropical setting, the island is alive with watersports activities yet enjoys a relaxed tempo of life.  In this turquoise water, white sand beach, and lushly vegetated island you can choose to actively pursue your favorite watersport passions or do nothing at all.  In her own way, Isla Cozumel caters to every visitor in a very unique and personal way.

The Island of Cozumel is one of the better known and more popular diving destinations in the world. A beautiful little island off Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula, Isla Cozumel beckons to scuba divers and water sports enthusiasts from around the globe.  Cozumel is accessible by major airlines landing at Cozumel’s own International Airport, cruise ships docking at one of its cruise terminals and by a short ferry boat ride across the channel from Playa del Carmen. Cozumel is a tiny island measuring 34 miles long from North to South and 8 miles wide from East to West.

DSC_0648-200Cozumel has become the popular diving destination it is today for many reasons. First and foremost, the island is home to the second largest coral reef system in the world.  The water is warm and clear and thanks to a mild ocean current, the scuba diving is almost effortless. The reefs are alive and abundantly populated with numerous species of fish, and thanks to the Mexican Government, are protected in Chankanaab National Park.  Even the locals are not allowed to fish in this beautiful marine preserve.  That means the marine inhabitants and the beautiful sea fans and coral reefs will be there for our enjoyment for generations to come.

It’s easy to get to Cozumel. Scuba Divers normally choose to fly directly into Cozumel International Airport.  The island is served by most major airlines including Aero Mexico, Air Tran, and United.  Depending on the time of day and time of year, going through immigration is relatively painless.  While some Resorts may pick you up at the airport, it’s not a problem if yours doesn’t.  The main city of San Miguel is next to the airport and most of the dive resorts are on the main road on the other side of San Miguel.  Shuttle vans are readily available for around $20 per person.

Cruise Ships are a popular way to visit Cozumel. There is a Cruise Ship Terminal in downtown San Miguel and another newer terminal a few miles south towards Chankanaab Marine Park.  Cozumel is currently the leader of cruise ship arrivals around the world.  It is estimated that between 2 and 3 million “Day Trippers” from the cruise ships visit the shops of Cozumel every year.

Another popular way to visit Isla Cozumel is by Ferry from Playa del Carmen. For years vacationers from Cancun and Playa del Carmen have taken the Ferry to Cozumel to visit this beautiful Island to enjoy the abundant watersports, shopping and restaurants.  At $13 per crossing, the Ferry is popular with the locals and people who work on the Island.

DSC_0481-200Scuba Diving has been a popular attraction for over 40 years on the Island of Cozumel and it is estimated that over 300,000 people come to Cozumel every year for the watersports. That’s not counting the 2 ½ million people arriving by cruise ships!  The first and most respected dedicated Dive Resort on the island is Scuba Club Cozumel.  Founded in 1976, this 61 room, waterfront Dive Resort has its own Dive Boats, Dive Shop and Restaurant.  Diving doesn’t get any easier than walking out of your room and onto the dive boat that’s waiting for you at the Resort’s own dock.  Managing Partner Timothy Massimino has been at the helm of Scuba Club Cozumel for 34 years now, overseeing a staff of 100-120 employees, some who have been with the resort for 20-30 years.

Booking a trip for you and your dive buddy or a group of divers is as easy as finding a reliable Dive Travel Wholesaler like Scuba Travel Ventures or Roatan Charter.  Working with a Dive Travel Specialist gives you a number of options in Airfare, Hotel Accommodations, Dive Operators and after dive attractions.  Seasoned Dive Operator Dive Paradise has their own fleet of Dive Boats, Dive Guides and Dive Instructors as well as their own Boat Pier near downtown San Miguel.  Independent Boat Operators like Sea Robin work with a number of Resort Hotels and arrangements can be made to pick you up at your own dock.

09-3546-200A major factor to consider in planning a dive trip is the amount of equipment support you can get when you are miles away from home and your local dive store. Cozumel has a number of dive stores scattered around the island but when it comes to repairs and hard to find spare parts, Cozumel Scuba Repair is the best place to go.  Founded by former NAVY SEAL Larry Cleghorn, Cozumel Scuba Repair has personnel that are qualified as repair technicians for most of the major equipment manufacturers in the world.  Knowing you can find that little 50 cent O-ring which saves your diving vacation goes a long way in making Cozumel next year’s dive destination of choice.

DSC_0314-200The Island of Cozumel takes its diving very seriously. For your diving safety and enjoyment there is a Hyperbaric Chamber and Medical Center downtown by the waterfront.  The Chamber is staffed by full-time Medical Professionals, including UHMS Certified Physicians trained to assist all Scuba Diving Injuries.  The Chamber is a Member of the SSS Recompression Chamber Network and part of the Divers Emergency Assistance Network.

If you’re into making six dives a day while on vacation, then Cozumel is a good choice for you. If your idea of a good vacation is waking up at 7 a.m., having a delightful breakfast, then packing your gear and going on the boat for a two tank dive, followed by lunch and a nap, then Cozumel is definitely your kind of place.   And the day doesn’t end there.  There is plenty of sightseeing to do on the island and many wonderful places to catch up on your Caribbean Dining experiences.  Your taste buds can experience everything from Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville to the Fogo Do Brasil Steak House and an after-dinner cigar at Mini Havana.

A good rule of thumb is not to make any scuba dives 24 hours before flying home. That last day on the island can be well-spent by renting a car and doing a little sight-seeing.  A favorite place to visit is Hacienda Antigua, Tequila Factory & Store for a little Tequila tasting.  It’s a short drive on Benito Juarez from downtown San Miguel, and being able to bring home a bottle of “Crema al Tequila” to pour on top of your ice cream will make you the talk of the town back home.

DSC_0450-200So when you are making out your “Bucket List” for places you’d like to dive before you die, Cozumel should be at the top of your list. Because after you’ve been there once, you’re  going to want to go back again and again.   So let’s recap the reasons why you are going to want to Dive Cozumel;  It’s a beautiful Island;  Cozumel has a temperate climate year round; The water is warm and clear, with gentle ocean currents; The marine life is abundant and protected.  The diving is easy from a boat yet accessible from shore.  The diving conditions appeal to all levels of diver experience and the grand majority of diving is between 30 and 100 feet.  There is an active Hyperbaric Chamber and Medical Clinic on the Island.  Cozumel itself is easy to get to; There are plenty of Resorts, Dive Operators and Dive Stores; There are plenty of Restaurants and Bars; Taxis are inexpensive.  There is no reason to drink & drive.  The Peso / Dollar exchange rate is around 13 to 1, making Cozumel a great value for your money.  Most of the people you deal with in Cozumel speak English in addition to being happy, friendly and courteous.  And most importantly, Cozumel is a safe place to vacation

Tourism is the bread and butter of many countries around the world. Political Leaders know how to roll out the red carpet for tourists if and when they want to.  The Political Leaders of Cozumel always want to.

Here is a quote from the Mayor of Cozumel,  Lic. Fredy Efren Marrufo Martin:  “Dear Friends: Welcome to Cozumel Island, our Heaven on Earth. An excellent tourist destination of the Mexican Caribbean, where you will enjoy its famous hospitality, and great services.  As Mayor, I welcome and encourage you to enjoy the natural beauties of Cozumel.  This paradise belongs to everyone.”

This is what Mayor Martin said to the people of Cozumel:  “Dear People of Cozumel: Cozumel is currently the leader of cruise ship arrivals around the world.  The best way to present ourselves to the tourists that visit us is by our politeness, hospitality and the excellent services we provide.  Cozumel is our home, I encourage that we work together to keep making our paradise an Island of peace and tranquility that we all can enjoy.”

Put Isla Cozumel on your “Bucket List.” You’ll be glad you did.
