Introducing Caribbean Dive News

by Gene Muchanski & Dana Polites
Caribbean Correspondents – Caribbean Dive News

Last year we introduced a concept called DIVE LOCAL and earlier this year we sponsored three Regional Dive Summits in Dallas, Chicago and Secaucus.  What we found out by talking with local dive industry professionals is that activity is the key to a healthy local dive community.  We learned that cooperation among like-minded businesses creates a tighter-knit and healthier community, but it is the communication of the community’s activities that make it successful.

With that in mind, we took our message to Roatan and talked with Resorts Owners, Managers and Dive Operators about their local diving community. Within a few days we formed a DIVE LOCAL – ROATAN Chapter consisting of Roatan Charter, Mayan Princess, Mayan Divers and Turquoise Bay Resort.  Their first big activity is the Roatan Photo Fest on September 24 – October 1, 2016.

A second DIVE LOCAL Group forming is DIVE LOCAL – SAINT LUCIA.  The Saint Lucia Tourist  Board is all excited about their Dive Fest 2016 that will be held on September 10-17, 2016.  We will be working with dive professionals in St. Lucia to promote their dive resorts, dive operators, dive professionals, local merchants, and restaurants on their island.

In a very short period of time, we have learned some Best Practices, working with local dive communities.  1.  Local Dive Professionals that work together, succeed more.  2. Local Tourist Boards, Chambers of Commerce, and Convention & Visitor Bureaus are Key Partners to a local community’s success.  3. Local dive businesses need to create and promote activities & events.  4. Local dive communities need to communicate their activities to their potential customers.

Caribbean Dive Professionals wanting to work collectively with DIVE LOCAL – CARIBBEAN should contact Gene Muchanski at gene@diveindustry.net  Please visit our new web site at www.CaribbeanDiveNews.com  and like our facebook page at www.facebook.com/CaribbeanDiveNews

Gene-Video-200It All Begins in May – or Whenever You Do.
by Gene Muchanski, Editor
The Dive Industry Professional

All year long we’ve been telling the industry that January through March is our recreation’s pre-season marketing months.  That makes April and May the preparation months for a season that traditionally begins on Memorial Day and ends after Labor Day.

Seasonality curves are a tricky topic to talk about on a national level and especially on an international basis.  Every area has their own seasonal time limits, whether they are natural or man-made.  Natural limitations are based on the local weather and man-made limitations are things like your customers’ activity schedules.  We can work within the weather limitations by adjusting the type of diving equipment we use and the type of diving activities we participate in.  Working with different groups of customers that have different family and work schedules takes a little more strategy and planning. It’s all part of working smart instead of working hard.  Speaking of working smart…

There are things that have worked for our Dive Industry Association Members in the past and there are things that some have tried that didn’t work. It’s our job as Industry Marketing Professionals to share marketing tactics with you that have worked for people and tell you about the marketing tactics that usually don’t.  When enough people try something and have success with them, it’s called a “Best Practice.”  We’ve learned a bunch of Best Practices over the years and will be sharing them with our Members and other dive businesses that are participating in our DIVE LOCAL program.

This summer we will be blogging about Best Practices and working with Dive Local Groups across the country and across the Caribbean. We will keep you informed about our progress, using this blog as the primary starting point.  You can subscribe to this blog by going to www.diveindustrynews.wordpress.com  If you have difficulty subscribing to the blog, email me at gene@diveindustry.net or call me at 321-914-3778.

Have a great Summer.

NAUI looks to raise awareness within the active lifestyle market.

Tampa, Fla., (May 2, 2016) – Amidst this year’s major advancements and changes occurring within the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI Worldwide), a leader in recreational scuba diver training and certification, is the recent development of its new promotional campaign designed to attract a worldwide audience of active lifestyle enthusiasts.

The campaign will include a series of five short videos each linked to a promotional email delivered to “opt in” recipients, along with social media placement on targeted magazine pages such as Islands and Scuba Diving. They will also be promoted on the following publications for one month at a time between May and the end of August: Marlin, Sport Fishing, Saltwater Sportsman, Yachting, Cruising World, Wakeboarding and Waterski.

“For more than two decades NAUI has relied primarily on its members to communicate the value of NAUI training to the general public,” said NAUI Executive Director Dallas Edmiston. “While that value is easily recognizable to those in the scuba industry, it is not where it should be with the general public. This is simply one element of a much larger campaign to connect the NAUI values and differences with those who are looking for unique and rewarding scuba training and education.”

Following the release, NAUI members and the general public alike will have the opportunity to access leading-edge training materials designed to educate and unite individuals dedicated to the dive industry. The campaign will inform audiences about what makes NAUI exceptional when it comes to scuba diving training, education and leadership.

These videos will be available for NAUI Affiliate members to download and use once the campaign is underway.

“It is NAUI leaders who have initiated and pioneered many of the training and education innovations in the industry; and we plan to continue this leadership role going forward,” said Edmiston.

To learn more about the DIFFERENCE that is NAUI training, visit www.naui.org and follow NAUI on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/NAUIWorldwide/

Founded in 1960, NAUI Worldwide is the scuba industry’s largest not-for-profit agency whose purpose is to enable people to enjoy underwater activities as safely as possible by providing the highest quality practical education, and to actively promote the preservation and protection of the world’s underwater environments. As a pioneer in diving education, NAUI has developed many of the programs and concepts accepted throughout the diving industry. NAUI: The Definition of Diving!

Gene-Video-200April Activities – It’s all About Activity
by Gene Muchanski, Editor
The Dive Industry Professional

April is normally about following up with the contacts we made in the first three months of the year.  January through March is the diving industry’s pre-season marketing period.  Our manufacturers, travel companies and certification agencies meet with their local dealers, agents and representatives in their home territory.  At the same time, the local dive industry professionals get their annual opportunity to meet face-to-face with their customers. That’s what we mean by pre-season marketing.  It’s the time of year when we introduce new programs,  products and services to our customers and set the pace for the whole new season.  It’s when we book our merchandise orders, travel trips and certification forecasts.  It’s also when the diving consumers make their plans to sign up for scuba training, continuing education, vacation travel and equipment purchases.  That’s what the pre-season is all about.

So if January through March is our industry’s pre-season time period, that makes April and May our time for follow-up.  This year, instead of exhibiting at every show during the first three months of the year and then waiting to follow-up in the next two months, we decided to exhibit at the shows in high-diver count geographical hubs, conduct regional summit meetings at the shows and conduct an integrated pre-show, at-show and post-show marketing campaign at the same time.  It was a lot more work doing it this way but the results were fantastic.

One of the many things we learned this year is that Local Diving Activity is the heart-beat of a strong National Diving Industry.  What makes a national diving industry successful is strong local diving communities.  What makes a local diving community successful is its local diving activities.  The biggest challenge we face in building a strong national diving industry is the organization and coordination of fragmented local diving hubs.  One way of uniting the various market niches is by agreeing to participate in an annual event that showcases an entire region, like the annual Beneath the Sea Show in the Northeast.  If all the segments of the diving industry like the manufacturers, retailers, boat operators, clubs, diving instructors and travel professionals would conduct their annual events at Beneath the Sea, the show could easily double in size.  If all the market segments like recreational scuba, public safety diving, tech, resort, freediving and spearfishing would participate, there would be no telling how big the show could get or how many opportunities would be made available to the exhibitors, participants and attendees.

Regardless of whether or not the market segments and niches in the diving community come together, the first step is to plan and promote activities in your local diving community.  How about we start there while we learn to play nice with each other?
